my review on EAMCET 2012 web counseling

OKay, I am done with the option entry on the web counseling. I want to give a quick overview of how it went.

> Login was quite simple Except that I am on a mac and the website supports only Internet explorer (as if they are a microsoft devoted fan). I had to borrow a cousin's windows laptop for that. But over all, Login was easy.
> Today I had the choice for option entry. The site is very very very non user friendly. The headers are gone. There is hardly any decent help on the steps to. I was expecting tool tips and suggestions but nothing existed.
> The site has a location selector option so its easy to downsize the list of colleges you want to target.
> The option entry was good but I always had this pop up error message that hardly made any sense to me. However, that didn't trouble me any further.
> The PDF generation was very good. I was able to check the list of colleges I selected and make changes as required.

Some instructions I would like to suggest:
>Even though your rank does not deserve to get in top colleges, do not withdraw in opting top colleges and directly go for next colleges.
>As it is known fact that 6000+ members out the top 15000 members did not attend the certificate verification, it increases the probability of getting good colleges. So never regret choosing best colleges for the first
.>As instructed by the eamcet staff during certificate verification never share your login id and password with your friends.
>After you are done with the option entry better have a screen shot of your saved options and get a print out of it as it may be useful if something goes wrong in future with the eamcet officials.
>Finally reminding dont at all forget to log out after everything is done especially when you are using some other'a computer or browsing outside in internet.
I WISH ONE AND ALL THE BEST LUCK

About engineering course: Automobile engineering

AE (Automobile Engineering)

Rank of preference by many students: not known but seeing cut off ranks, it looks to be close to the top list

What is Automobile engineering?
This is a newly introduced course in about 5+ colleges in AP. Should appreciate JNTU and the colleges that took the course considering the current market spur on this sector. Automobile engineering is a mechanical look alike course that deals with cars, bikes, and truck. You must be passionate to do this course. You will study many common subjects of Mechanical engineering and hence the college can club you with this department.   This is definitely going to be an amazing course and very focused course. Car manufacturing companies are evolving in India and its time we give them more specialized engineers from automobile engineering department than from a multi-skilled mechanical engineering department. You will study fluid dynamics, thermo dynamics and many other physics subjects in depth during this course. Your project work might be very interesting too.

Complexity: Upper medium difficult

Choosing a college:
Choose a college with high infrastructure to run this course. All the 5 colleges that are offering this course in JNTU seem to be good with VNR topping them all.

Higher education: Highly recommended. However, you might have to think of going abroad for higher education rather than in India. Generally, Mechanical engg students take automobile engineering as specialization during masters, as you are already done with this course in bachelors, its good to go abroad for a higher degree. Germany is one great option considering education is free as of today.

Job Opportunities: Excellent jobs in India. The automobile market in India is soaring high. Benz, Volkswagen and many others have started their plants in India. Expecting 100% placements in the first batches of Automobile engineering.

Will you enjoy this course?
Ofcourse you will. Though, you will need to study even lot as you might not find lot of helpers around. Join in a lot of online forums, live the passion, I would say, start your course with a car design in your mind. Everytime you study a subject, think of how you will apply that on your car. You can try experimenting on your dad’s car if you can ;)

About engineering course: IT

IT (Information Technology)
Rank of Preference by many students: #4

What is IT?
As discussed earlier, IT is different to CSE in reality. IT talks about how you manage information and the technology you shall use to communicate information. When you are designing a mobile network, an IT engineering will be the one who will link up and define the logic for how information should pass between stations and what is optimal solution for a problem where as CSE person will write the code to make his logic a reality. If you ask me, IT guys are excellent software managers. They know programming and they can handle managing the way programs are developed and implemented. They should be the ones with domain expertise (like how banks work, how share trading works, how hospital works etc) also.

Complexity: Lower medium difficult

Choosing a college: Fortunately, everyone owns a computer and that’s all you need to understand them. And adding to that, every college has enough resources for this course. All you need to look at is for the faculty, is the college subscribed to any advanced training programs (eg: KMIT is linked up with adobe and google programs) etc. Also look at previous placement track. If you don’t get placed when in college, it is not so easy when you come out of college.

Higher Education: Well, who would say higher education is bad? However, as per trends, if you do higher education in India you might probably end up again sitting with B.tech fresher for training and the job. There might be hardly any difference in your pay. You got to think of IITs and other top colleges if you want to go for higher education. Going abroad is a very open option and many exercise it.

Job Opportunities: Unfortunately, if you don’t find a job when in college (campus placements) don’t blame anyone if you don’t find a job after that. Sorry but this is a fact. Every department is eligible to apply for software jobs. All you need is a B.Tech. IT students have not shown trends where they explore opportunities out of software though some prefer getting into government jobs at times.

Will you enjoy this course? Yes you should. After all, this entire course is fun.  End of your b.tech you don’t need to be surprised if you have a million friends from different colleges. You can keep on attending events and seminars outside your college. If you are a techie freak, start writing some decent software when in college and who knows, you might become a Mark Zukerburg overnight.

About engineering course: CSE

CSE (Computer Science Engineering)
Rank of preference by many students: #3

What is CSE?
Many people think CSE and IT are one and the same, but its not. Read further to understand that. Computer science engineering is a course that deals with the study of computer programming and core level behavior of software, programming languages and other concepts of programming. CSE engineers are high-level programmers. They understand how an operating system behaves from its core to how it is represented on the user level.  Many subjects are in common for CSE and IT (Thanks to JNTU) but in reality they have a beeline separator always.

Complexity: Lower Medium difficult

About engineering courses: MECH

MEC (Mechanical Engineer)
Rank of preference by many students #2

What is MEC?
Mechanical engineering is a course that existed in many colleges for quite some time but students were reluctant to take up the course in the beginning. This is because of the complexity around this course. What do you study here? You will study everything from how a wheel behaves to a how to design a robot probably. It involves understanding relative motion, dynamics etc. There is so much you will re-read from your 10th to 12th physics. This is not for you if you are not a physics fan. The course is fun and there is so much to learn. You gotta be conscious all the time and grasp the subject. Just read the syllabus book for mechanical course (available on JNTU  website) and you will know what you are going to study. Be prepared.

Complexity: Upper medium difficulty

Choosing a college: Just like ECE you need to pick a college with large infrastructure or you will never make an impact. These days’ mechanical students from AP are submitting papers to events outside the country and some of their projects even participated in competitions with international students. You must research on the college that is investing on research for this field. Also check the faculty (all college websites have the list).

Higher education: Highly recommended. Though many travel abroad for M.Sc and PhD. There are excellent universities in Germany and the education there is free too (Even for international students).

Job Opportunities: As far as I was told, there are too many jobs and very few people in this dept. Especially in India, there is good demand for this course students. Many companies that are dependent on mechanical engineering have started their plants in India. Don’t always imagine designing cars, you might as well be designing machinery; process chain plants or get into robotics. Oh, as always, the software industry also wants you!

Will you enjoy this course: If you live with the subjects you will enjoy the course better than anyone else. Just look around you, everything is mechanics.

About Engineering course: ECE

E.C.E (Electronics & Communication Engineering:
Rank of preference by many students: #1

What is ECE?
During this course you will start with learning about basic components of electronic circuits to VLSI devices. As you know the oldest computer is as big as a room, today the computer is as small as your cell phone, this is only possible because of the research happening by this department. As technology is evolving the need for ECE engineers will also increase. They are present in almost every sector. If I have to make it simple, the whole study revolves around an electron and its behavior. If you are not a person with imagination and are not able to make hypothesis easily, this is not a course for you.

Complexity: upper medium difficulty

Choosing a college: I suggest you to choose a college with proper infrastructure and experienced faculty, as this study is dependent on experimenting and practical experience.

Higher education: Students after B.Tech often prefer M.Tech / M.Sc and even PhD later. It is highly recommended by many experts to go for higher studies.

Job Opportunities:  Many ECE students end up in the software industry after their B.tech. Because of their diverse experience and ECE being the top course taken (meaning most of the college’s intelligentsia is in this dept). However, there are so many other opportunities in telecom, research and government etc.

Will you enjoy this course?
Of course, you will.   Just don’t deviate from the subject. Have fun during engineering but then you can’t write your exam just with limited knowledge. You can attend a lot of seminars and contests during your b.tech if you are strong on your subjects.
